When Samir Selmanovic converted to Christianity as a young soldier in the Yugoslav army, his — Croatian, atheist and culturally Muslim — family was heartbroken. “They hired top psychiatrists to talk to me,” Selmanovic told a meeting of the Religion Newswriters Association. When that didn’t work, they summoned an imam.

Book Openers: Huston Smith at 90 – Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim . . . Christian

In his autobiography, “Tales of Wonder,” religion scholar Huston Smith reveals that he “never met a religion I did not like.” Indeed, he practiced Hinduism for ten years, followed by ten years of Buddhism, and ten years of Islam — without ever forsaking the Christianity of his missionary parents.
