Thank you, Jan. I just checked out your blog at http://www.jan-stanton.com/blog.html. Interesting thoughts about how we often read scripture through a distorted lens. Hmmmm.

I'm listening to some old lectures by Alan Watts from the '60s. He says the commandment to love God has to be understood as a koan -- a meditation, a spiritual puzzle.

That's because we don't honestly love God, we love ourselves, and we are disingenuous when we claim to love God. We only do it because "He's the boss." ---Barbara

Interesting. As far as gun-free churches are concerned, this would be a very old problem. Churches as sanctuaries of nonviolence for those fleeing violence go way back in Western history. No doubt the sanctuary was abused many times in history. The bishops' statement I cited names a few of those instances....

The trouble with gun free zones is that they become shooting galleries. I do not own any guns, but last week 8 people were killed in a nail salon in a domestic dispute. A few years ago I worked for an aerospace firm which had armed guards. A distraught husband wanted to see his wife but the guards told him he could not enter but that he could call her. She had a cubicle not far from mine and foolishly agreed to meet her husband outside. The guards were suspicious and called for backup and the police. The man shot his wife but was detained by the security guards until the cops arrived. Had he entered no telling what would have happened.

Interesting. I wonder if people would have to live in the same household to enter into such a contract... And I wonder whether a lot of domestic partners are already simply friends wanting to take advantage of the domestic partners benefits.

Also worth considering, in my opinion, letting people who are not romantic or sexual partners create economic and social households. A friend posted about a New Hampshire bill that, in addition to legalizing same sex marriage, would allow civil union between any unmarried adult competent to enter into a contract, including relatives.
